LIGHT IN THE CORNER OF THE WORLD (MMFCI, 30 Years After)
Date: February 26, 2014
On May 16, 2014, the Miraculous Medal Family Center, Inc. will celebrate the 30th year of its foundation by Fr. Victor Elia, CM. It is located within the grounds of the National Shrine of Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal in Sucat, Muntinlupa City.
The project has since helped the poorest in the parish community to send their children to school and to learn to live fruitful and God-centered lives. Beneficiaries number an average of 500 a year, varying according to the number and constancy of benefactors and sponsors.
MMFCI is a non-profit corporation registered with the Securities and Exchange Commission, an effort of one of its former executive directors Fr. Victor Velasco, CM and accredited with the Department of Social Work and Development by another former executive director Sr. Lourdes Mercado, DC.
It’s development program principally provides education, complemented by parallel projects of health services, provision for food supplements, socio-cultural activities and spiritual formation. Parents are also provided with livelihood skills training to free their children from their needed assistance in earning their daily bread.
Typically Vincentian in its businesslike structure yet totally dependent on Divine Providence for its resources, MMFCI has survived three decades through the generosity of institutions (the current biggest supporter is the international Unbound) and individuals, including middle-lower income sponsors who share whatever little blessings they can from their own needs.
Administrative/managerial services had been selflessly rendered by CM priests and Daughters of Charity sisters who served as executive directors at various periods. Among them are CM priests Fr. Norberto Carcellar, Danilo Carolino, Victor Velasco, Ranilo Mahumot, DC sisters, Lourdes Mercado, Terresa Matricio, Estrella Zenarosa, Marites Buensuceso, Luz Jael, Leticia Derilo, Enriqueta Legaste. The present executive director is newly ordained Fr. Kit C. Torayno, CM.
The chairman of MMFCI’s board of trustees is invariably the superior of the local CM community in Sucat. Bishop Rolando Santos of Alutao, Papua New Guinea was among them. His heart partly lives in MMFCI and he never fails to visit its small office whenever he is in the country. His family resources came to the rescue during a period of very low financial means. Fr. Francisco Nicolas P. Magnaye, Jr., CM is the current chairman.
Thirty years is a comparatively short time compared with long-standing institutions, but it is a bright light that the CM can proudly place on a lamp stand to illumine a small corner of the world that would be dear to the heart of Saint Vincent de Paul.
Please help MMFCI in whatever way you can: support a scholar or fund its parallel services and projects. Get in touch with Fr. Kit C. Torayno at 837 2688, mobile 09328608489 email firstname.lastname@example.org.
